Maybe its that simple, but wouldn't I be breaking the law not being a Corgi
registered fitter?

It isn't Corgi any more it's Gas Safe.

A similar question arises. I think an unregistered person cannot
legally do gas fitting but let's cross post to uk.legal and see, shall
we?

There was a spectacular bang just down the road from us where a DIY
enthusiast had installed his own gas fired central heating. The burnt
out shell of the building remained an eyesore for a few years afterwards
as the insurers would not pay out. Uncertified work on gas installations
effectively voids your insurance against fire and explosion.

Luckily no one was killed in the violent explosion.

Any competent person can do gas fitting. Only registered people can
receive payment.

An unregistered person can carry out gas work on a non-commercial
basis if he is competent to do so. However, there will be trouble if
things go bang.
