My son loves lego. However, whenever I look on the lego shop they are
out of stock of many of the kits. Similarly the online retailers are
also out of stock.

However on ebay there are plenty going for far above the RRP. Is this
some sign of price fixing?

Its either inept marketing or some plot that we will never understand till
its too late... I blame the Starlings.

There are old-fashioned things called High St. retailers.

Have you looked in any of them ?

That would be a remarkably obscure method if it was.
Not to mention a sure way for such a Co. to drive themselves out of busines
if their only route to market was via eBay sellers!

Yes. They also have no stock of the kits we are interested in.

Then how do you explain the fact that many kits are going for much
more than their list price on ebay?

Even the official lego catalogue lists some items as "hard to find"!

I don't think there's anything particularly unusual in that. Some products
will prove more popular than anticipated & hence demand will exceed supply,
at least for a short time.

If you haven't already done so you could try asking Lego when the kits
you're interested in will be back in stock.

Since a printed catalague has a much longer lifetime than a web page
why would they print "Hard to Find" if they were not expecting long
term shortages of these products? What are the reasons for expecting
long term shortages for a company like Lego apart from deliberate
under production?

After all it's a pretty poor business that can't predict sales volumes
accurately enough to have so many products of out stock.

And indeed where are all these ebay sellers getting their stocks of
brand new boxed lego kits to sell at double the retail price?

I ebayed lots of lego. Not little fiddling bits of it but great
bargain amounts of it (multiple kg) - we do have a room full of lego
now.
