Cheques

Yesterday I was paying my BT bill at a PO by cheque. The woman behind
the counter said that I wouldn't be able to use cheques at the PO next
month because the Government were getting rid of them (cheques, not POs
or months). So when the banks get rid of cheques they will no doubt
claim that they are doing so because no one uses them anymore, for
example, they will say, the PO stopped doing so in July 2011.

I think all this has had to have a rethink on the part of the banks as
cheque usage has recently increased from what I hear. I suspect though that
what will happen is that we will be charged for cheques in order to dissuade
us from using them. Or am I being cynical again?

I believe cheque /guarantee/ cards are being phased out next month.
Cheques will be still valid though.

Cheques are /not/ being phased out (yet).

Some news: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14122129:

... after widespread criticism from MPs and
charities, it has now decided they will be
kept "as long as customers need them".

Presumably the time will come when the Payments Council will decide that
customers _don't_ need them, after all they don't say

... they will be kept "as long as customers want them".
