Is that stuff footballers put on their football boots any better for
stopping shoe leather getting wet than shoe polish?

I'd have thought car polish with silicone might actually work better than
shoe polish, which in my view is glorified tinted grease of some sort.

One one occasion in the distant past I tried pure silicone grease - it
ruined the leather and wasn't particularly any better at stopping the
leather getting soggy while riding a motorcycle in wet weather.

Oh you mean dubbin!

There's no mention of silicone on the tin of dubbin I have.
