I went into a charity shop today in London and was surprised to see
them selling many lines of 'new' stock direct from factories.

They only pay 10% of commercial council tax as they're registered
charities. Isn't this a breach of law selling 'new' items?

I really feel charity should begin at home and as they have 'millions'
in the bank they should at least pay full council tax and pay staff
the minimum wages. They're taking advantage of old ladies by not
paying them.

I also think the reason for 'new' lines is... the staff in the back
shop are getting the goods before it gets to the shop floor and
selling it on eBay.

This shop I went into today has Spaniards working there and it looked
as if she had all her friends in the back shop having a great time
looking through bags of donated goods.

I think 'all' charity shops are running some kind of scam!

Well, some people do abuse the system it is true, but I don't think you can
actually say they are running an organised scam. I can only speak for
Geranium shops, and there are strict guidelines for workers wanting to have
any of the donations. Their money is as good as anyone elses after all.
As for new items. sometimes this is the case and often the goods on sale
have been sold to the charity at a lower cost than normal as a kind of
donation. Do you say no?
With the current axing of social services, we find that more and more the
charity is having to run a discontinued service for a fraction of the cost
the Government put in originally, and there really is not a lot of money
about. If you spend all your reserves then any return on investments is not
there to cover sudden unexpected expe nses and new projects. You really
cannot operate at a profit, but on the other hand running your operation
near to breaking even is dangerous in the current climate particularly. You
cannot just end your services that people rely on for a few months pending
finances.
